Enhancing Policy Making with Artificial Intelligence is a two-day programme that helps public policymakers understand where artificial intelligence can genuinely add value to their work, how to use it effectively, and how to deploy it responsibly. It is designed for policy officials, analysts and managers across national, regional and local government, and assumes no technical background. The policy cycle is the organising thread throughout: every session links AI back to a stage of that cycle, from agenda setting and policy formulation through to implementation and evaluation, so participants leave with a clear sense of where AI adds value and where it does not belong.
The first day builds understanding and practical confidence. After an introduction to the policy cycle and strategic thinking, participants learn what current AI systems can and cannot do, explore international examples of AI in government, and consider how human judgement, values and lived experience should work alongside machine capabilities.
The second day turns to risk, governance and strategy. Drawing on well-known failures, participants examine how things go wrong and how to prevent it. They apply recognised risk frameworks, explore legal, ethical and transparency duties, and consider the strategic questions organisations face, including data readiness, procurement, skills and hidden costs. Workshops will be included throughout both days for participants to apply AI tools in real policy tasks and to learn how to critically appraise outcomes. At the end of the programme, each participant will have created a personal action plan to take back to their organisation
