Overview

Strategic Disaster Risk Management and Leadership

The UNDRR defines disaster risk management as the application of disaster risk reduction policies and strategies to prevent new disaster risk, reduce existing disaster risk and manage residual risk, and to contribute to the strengthening of resilience and reduction of disaster losses. To achieve this, nations must prepare themselves against the risks of disaster and mitigate their causes. The Sendai agreement sets out four clear priorities: a better understanding of the risks, strengthen nations’ response to risk, invest in risk reduction plans, and enhance plans to recover, rehabilitate and reconstruct after a disaster. Failing to respond appropriately to these priorities could result in fatal outcomes and mass destruction from disasters.

This four-day programme Strategic Disaster Risk Management and Leadership analyses the implementation of the Sendai Framework as the foundation for the course with a review of the seventh session of the Global Platform Disaster Risk Reduction. Participants will learn how to establish strong inclusive and decisive management and leadership practices in disaster risk, how to better collaborate with stakeholders across sectors, systems and borders to strengthen preparedness and response, and how to implement disaster risk strategies alongside climate ambitions. By the end of the course, attendees will have established how to monitor and review plans that result in better outcomes in disaster management.
