Overview
Strategic Regulation of Digital and Crypto Payment Systems
In a rapidly evolving financial landscape, decentralised finance, cryptocurrency and the expansion of payment gateways are redefining transactions, raising both opportunities and risks. Decentralised finance has enabled two parties to transact directly with each other without the interaction of third parties such as banks, thereby reducing transaction times and costs. Simultaneously, new payment systems and gateways have allowed for increased efficiency and accessibility of payments, including the option for payment with cryptocurrency. Conversely, the risks and vulnerabilities presented by these technological developments include money laundering, insufficient consumer protections and the potential for fraud. Financial regulators must be agile in their response to these evolutions to ensure that payment gateways and the application of financial technology are not harmful to the security of transactions, consumer protection, or fair competition.
This course equips regulators with the knowledge and skills for effective regulation and oversight of technological developments in payment gateways to curtail fraud, money laundering, and systemic vulnerabilities, while fostering innovation. Drawing on real-world case studies, participants will explore global best practices and strategies to shape the future of financial regulation, such as the MiCA, and prepare for emerging trends like central bank digital currencies. By the end of the course, regulators will have a better understanding of the new regulatory instruments and technologies being used to monitor and create safe and secure digital payment systems and cryptocurrency transactions.
